About
Starting out with web development in a small business atomic web design in 1998, I grew up as a coder. I’d jumped on the internet bandwagon around 1996 and was starting to see it really emerge and mature. I wanted to get amongst it as quickly as possible, and thanks to some mighty patient folks in IRC, I was honing my HTML skills quickly. Hard as it is to believe now, this was something marketable and genuinely useful in the late 90s. I still remember staring at my first animation on Netscape Navigator. It was a turning point for me at least, the static web was becoming dynamic.
Diving head first into VBScript and ASP I felt I could do anything. I had my trusty kit for web development, including graphics, and there were no bounds. An Access database gave endless opportunities for content management and this was an exciting time. Keeping up with the industry was tough, but I was keen and it seemed worth it. But there was a point where my work was repetition, I’d built assets which I could easily re-sell, but I was learning little and couldn’t see a great way to expand my market.
Taking a tough decision, I left the web development industry behind and took a side-step into IT consulting at the end of 2001. It’s been a great few years and I’ve learnt a lot, and enjoyed every second. I still keep a lot of personal projects alive, and try to ensure I learn something each day. I’ve been an infrastructure and operations specialist in the past few years, and I’d like to gain more depth in these areas as the services-based industry continues to grow.
I’ve been a professional in the industry since 1998, and have a Bachelor of Information Technology from the University of Canberra. I also hold an ITIL Foundation Certificate.
